Research Projects
I am currently writing a book with the working title of ‘The History of the British Newspaper and Magazine Topical Cartoon 1900-2023’. This is an overview of the development of the advent of daily visual satire in the British print media including work of cartoonists ranging from David Low to Matt. It will also include a full reappraisal of the role of the pocket cartoonist and one of its greatest exponents, Osbert Lancaster. The book will consider social history and place the cartoons within both a history of the popular and so-quality press and a wider social context. There will be chapters on the strip cartoon, diverse voices and a consideration of what lies in store for the form in a digital future.
Currently working on journal articles which consider the democratisation of the newspaper cartoon and the use of metaphor and metonymy within the genre.
Also in development is a regular newspaper column which will discuss topical issues through the prism of journalism and take a light-hearted look at what these issues mean for the public.
I am always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to discuss mutual research interests
